Now Trending in Home Design

Builder's Brief

Understated elegance and purposeful practicality is the direction currently dominating home design and keeping up with latest trends in the design world is important for builders and clients alike. Working with fresh ideas and understanding how to tie them into timeless style gives a builder the ability to bring together the best of current trends and the beauty of classical design.  Awareness of new concepts in design empowers a client to bring their ideas for the project to their builder and gives confidence when presenting their thoughts on the direction they want to take for their build.

Warm Tones

Interior design has been dominated by bright whites and dusty blues with grey undertones for the last ten years, but now the trend is toward more warm tones.  Earthtones with creamy bases are very popular in current design trends.  These colors give a home a warm, welcoming glow and invite you into the space with cozy comfort.  From the richness of a mauve to the dept of a forest green, these colors bring life into a space and connect the vibrance of the outdoors to the inside of the home.

Dirty Kitchen

Dramatically open kitchens have been the desire of homeowners for many years, but things are beginning to change.  Instead of one large kitchen, open for all to see, designers are cutting back on kitchen size and adding in separate spaces designed to keep food preparation messes out of sight.  The main kitchen can be used for entertaining and serving, while the butler’s pantry or “dirty kitchen” gives the host a workspace that is kept away from guests’ view.  If you love to host, this may be the design choice that proves to be a must-have, as it enables you to enjoy your guests congregating in your main kitchen, without having unsightly prep dishes and chopping boards sitting around,

Smaller Master Bedrooms

Cavernous main bedrooms with wasted square footage are no longer the goal in home design.  Practical sizes, such as 16×16 are currently very popular.  This smaller footprint gives the room a cozier feel and leaves more square footage available for other purposes, such as storage.  Sleek, uncluttered main bedrooms are the goal, with minimal furniture in the room.

Built-in Closet Storage

To accommodate storage needs, wile keeping minimal furniture in the bedroom, closets are being designed with built-in storage.  Instead of the traditional, free-standing dresser and chest of drawers, builders are putting in custom storage, built right into the closet.  Keeping all of the clothing and dressing needs all in one space, having closet storage just makes sense.  Why haven’t we been doing it this way all along?

Laundry in Master Suite

Including laundry facilities in the master suite is changing the way we think about the laundry room.  The convenience of having your washer and dryer in your master bathroom is very enticing.  From hamper to folded and put up, the entire chore could be done in the same area with your bathroom, laundry and closet all within a few feet of each other.  If you have a large family, the master laundry facilities could be in addition to a main laundry room for the rest of the family.

Secret Rooms

Imagine walking into a room with walls lined with bookcases and then realizing one of there is a door hidden in them!  This latest trend harkens back to a time long gone by, but is now being brought to life again.  Whether it be a door to a home office, a private library, or a speakeasy, these hidden doors leading to secret rooms are certainly a fun addition to home design.  We could put pictures of these rooms here, but if we did, would they really be secret?
